How GPS works
GPS, or Global Positioning System, consists of 27 satellites that orbit the earth. The GPS was actually developed by the US military for official use, but it was introduced to the commercial public through GPS receivers and devices.
Common GPS features
Some of the common features found in GPS receivers used in cars, cellphones, and other handheld devices are LCD screens and pre-loaded maps. LCD screens allow you to view your own location or another person's locations in the map. As for pre-loaded maps, these are usually found in navigational tools that help you avoid getting lost or get back on the right track when out on a hiking trip.
